The Man Who Knew Too Much (1956)Dr. Ben McKenna, his wife Jo and their son Hank are on a touring holiday of Africa when they meet the mysterious Louis Bernard on a bus. The next day Bernard is murdered in the local marketplace, but before he dies he manages to reveal details of an assassination about to take place in London. Fearing that their plot will be revealed, the assassins kidnap Hank in order to keep the McKenna's silent. Ben and Jo go to London and take matters into their own hands.

Premier filmmaker Alfred Hitchcock cast Doris Day and Jimmy Stewart for his remake of his own 1934 suspense yarn, "The Man Who Knew Too Much," and downtown Peoria's nonprofit Apollo Theater is showing it on Saturday, May 8.

Hitchcock's original was his first international hit, and the '50s version benefits from star power as well as Technicolor cinematography. The accomplished director said the 1934 film was "the work of a talented amateur and the second was made by a professional."

Stewart stars as an American doctor who's vacationing in Morocco with his wife (Day) and 8-year-old son when he inadvertently sees a murder and learns of an upcoming assassination attempt in London. The would-be killers kidnap the child to keep the couple silent.

Classic Hitchcock complications and intrigue keep audiences engaged.

Co-starring are Brenda De Banzie, Bernard Miles, Ralph Truman, Daniel Gélin, Alan Mowbray and Hillary Brooke.

"The Man Who Knew Too Much" won an Oscar for Day's hit song "Que Sera, Sera."
