October 22nd, Smooth talking insurance salesman Walter Neff meets attractive Phyllis Dietrichson when he calls to renew her husband's automobile policy. The couple are immediately drawn to each other and an affair begins. They cook up a scheme to murder Mr. Dietrichson for life insurance money with a double indemnity clause. Apollo, library welcome 9th annual film noir fest
Seven movies in four days with some of the top names in 1940s and '50s Hollywood highlight Peoria’s 9th annual film noir festival at downtown Peoria’s nonprofit Apollo Theater and Peoria Public Library’s Lakeview Branch October 21-24.
Femme fatale Barbara Stanwyck, tough-guy Robert Mitchum, sultry Rita Hayworth and legendary Burt Lancaster star in the movies, a popular crime genre featuring stark photography, bleak plots and an atmosphere of dread.
The four-day fest kicks off on Wednesday, Oct. 21 at the library’s Lakeview location with a free screening of “Affair in Trinidad,” followed by three double features at the Apollo.
Mitchum stars in “The Big Steal” and “Night of the Hunter,” showing Thursday, Oct. 22. Stanwyck stars in “Sorry, Wrong Number” and “Double Indemnity,” on Friday, Oct. 23. Lancaster stars in “Kiss the Blood off My Hands” and “Criss Cross” on Saturday, Oct. 24.
Co-sponsored by the Apollo Theater and Friends of the Peoria Public Library, the double features will be introduced by author and historian Norm Kelly (Mitchum), Illinois Central College professor Craig Shurtleff (Stanwyck) and journalist and Western Illinois University professor Bill Knight (Lancaster) |
