Star Trek: The Wrath of Khan (1982)August 14-15th, It is the twenty-third century. Admiral James T. Kirk is feeling old; the prospect of accompanying his old ship the Enterprise—now a Starfleet Academy training ship—on a two-week cadet cruise is not making him feel any younger. But the training cruise becomes a deadly serious mission when Khan appears after years of exile—and holding the power of creation itself... Two favorite movies from 15 years apart bring two sides of the Space Race to downtown Peoria’s nonprofit Apollo Theater Friday and Saturday, August 14 and 15.

Showing Friday will be Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan (1982), an excellent theatrical yarn based on Gene Roddenberry’s popular television series. Focused on the adventurers from Star Fleet, its plot has them confront a former villain, Khan – from 1967’s TV episode “Space Seed” – portrayed by Ricardo Montalban, who died this year.

If the Star Trek canon showed the possibilities for humanity’s use of rockets for exploration, 1964’s dark comedy Dr. Strangelove, or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love The Bomb showed how fools with technology can spell doom.

Star Trek II stars William Shatner, Leonard Nimoy and the rest of the long-running series’ familiar faces, plus Paul Winfield and Kirstie Alley.

Dr. Strangelove features George C. Scott, Sterling Hayden, James Earl Jones, Keenan Wynn, Slim Pickens and – in a triple role – Peter Sellers.

The Peoria Astronomical Society will introduce Star Trek II; Illinois Central College film professor Craig Shurtleff will introduce Dr. Strangelove.
