When the Apollo Theatre replaced the Crescent in 1914 after a fire on the Main Street location, it was at a turning point in the amazing story that Peoria has been for show business for more than a century.

Decades ago, the Lovin' Spoonful rock group sang, "It makes you feel happy like an old-time movie," and the Apollo helps bring that joy to the movie-going experience.

Motion pictures can be traced to parlor-room productions projected from a primitive "magic lantern," through nickelodeons and "flickers" to one-reelers, silent features and the sound/color extravaganzas audiences expect today.

Some things are missing when we go to multiplexes, however: good films and intimacy in the theatrical experience.
